Is Vaping Safe? Exploring the Alarming Health Risks of E-cigarettes
Electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes, vapes, or electronic nicotine delivery systems (END), are battery-powered devices that heat a liquid (e-liquid) to produce an inhalable aerosol. Core components include a cartridge, heating element, battery, and sometimes a light. Devices have evolved from cigarette-like models to more advanced vape pens and pods. The e-liquid typically contains propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), flavorings, and often nicotine. While PG and VG are generally regarded as safe (GRAS) for ingestion, they may form harmful byproducts when heated—a process that can reach over 1000°C in some devices. Studies have identified volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and benzene in the aerosol, along with metal particles (e.g., nickel, chromium, silicates) originating from the heating coil or ceramic components. A major health concern is Vitamin E acetate (VEA), especially in THC-containing vapes, which has been strongly linked to EVALI (E-cigarette or Vaping product Use-Associated Lung Injury). Lipid-laden macrophages found in lung samples are a hallmark of such injuries. Even short-term exposure to certain flavoring chemicals can impair lung cell function and provoke inflammation. Beyond lung damage, e-cigarettes may affect the cardiovascular system, oral health, and carry a risk of nicotine poisoning, especially in youth users. The rapid increase in vaping among adolescents raises serious public health concerns, as it may promote later use of traditional cigarettes.
