1963 VW Beetle Door Finale: Window Success & The Wrong Door Seal! (Ep. 15)
Persistence pays off! In Episode 15 of the 1963 Beetle revival, we finally resolve the window "blocker" from Part 2. After the previous inner sweeps didn't fit, we sourced the correct parts and spent a patient afternoon lining up the clips and re-installing the window glass. With a fresh coat of grease on the regulator and some silicone spray in the channels, the window now glides up and down "nice and cool." We also made huge progress on the door frame itself. The $25 specialty adhesive remover worked wonders, turning the stubborn household caulk into "crumbs" that we could easily rub away. We prepped the door by replacing the disintegrated rubber bump stops, door-break seals, and painted-over plugs. However, car restoration always has one last surprise: after all that prep, we discovered our kit contained two right-hand door seals! It’s a bummer of a snag, but the passenger door is 95% of the way to a full restoration. Video Highlights: • [00:45] Correct Parts: Unboxing the new inner sweeps that actually fit the original metal wire. • [01:30] Patient Install: Lining up the clips and snapping the new sweeps into the door frame. • [03:30] Glass is Back: Carefully test-fitting and sliding the window glass back into its track. • [05:30] Regulator Maintenance: Cleaning out the old gunk and applying fresh grease for a smooth operation. • [10:30] Success!: Testing the window crank—it’s moving freely for the first time in years. • [12:30] Caulk Victory: Using the 3M remover to finally get the door skin 100% clean and flat. • [13:30] Detail Work: Replacing the rotted door-break seals and rubber plugs for a factory-fresh look. • [14:45] The Snag: Realizing we have a duplicate right-hand seal instead of a matching set.
