Nuno Oliveira's Shoulder-In Exercise 2: Cross the School and Switch
Shoulder-in on one rein is straightforward enough. But Nuno Oliveira's second exercise makes you do it on both — switching sides mid-session, in hand, without stopping. This is Exercise 2 from Oliveira's "Equestrian Art" — published by Richard Williams at Xenophon Press — and it's built around a single principle: it's the outside rein that brings the horse's shoulders to the inside, not the inside rein pulling them there. Rupert demonstrates in hand with Helios, working a simple cross-the-school pattern that forces you to keep switching sides — so you can't get lazy about which rein is which. 🎥 FREE Helios Harmony Intro Course: https://longridehome.com/onoutpout 📚 All Books Mentioned: https://longridehome.com/books 🎟️ Xenophon Press Discount Code: 7greatCUSTOMER (7% off) https://xenophonpress.com One rein positions. The other bends. Mixing them up is where shoulder-in falls apart. Here's what Exercise 2 teaches: ✔️ Why the outside rein puts the shoulder to the inside — and why the inside rein's only job is the bend ✔️ Oliveira's cross-the-school pattern: shoulder-in left, cut across, shoulder-in right — and why the constant side-change sharpens your rein awareness fast ✔️ Why a slow, unhurried walk is non-negotiable — and what Oliveira says happens to the horse's back if the stride gets too big ✔️ La Guérinière's preference for a square over a circle — and the surprising reason squares sometimes produce a rounder track ✔️ The 10-step rule: why the horse starts to disengage around step 10, and how keeping sessions short keeps them in the game ✔️ Why the whip stays right behind the girth — carrying the same habit from Exercise 1 into Exercise 2 ✔️ How this exercise sets up all future lateral work: yielding to the outside rein is good dressage, good Western riding, good horsemanship full stop 🕛 Timestamps: 00:00 – Exercise 2: introducing shoulders-in from Oliveira's book 01:00 – The outside rein principle: it brings the shoulder round 02:00 – Inside rein for flexion only; outside rein for positioning 03:00 – The cross-the-school pattern explained 04:00 – Slow walk to protect the back — Oliveira explains the mechanics 05:00 – Demonstration begins with Helios 06:00 – Switching sides and coordinating inside and outside rein 07:00 – Whip behind the girth; keeping the walk unhurried 08:00 – La Guérinière's square vs the circle 09:00 – The 10-step rule: keeping the horse in participation 10:00 – Wrap-up and preview of Exercise 3 📺 Related Videos: 🔹 Nuno Oliveira's Shoulder-In In-Hand — Exercise 1: • Nuno Oliveira's Shoulder-In, Read Straight... 🔹 Flying Changes In-Hand – Part 1: • Flying Changes In-Hand – Part 1/7: The Sec... 🔹 Passage In-Hand – Part 1: • How to teach your Horse Passage In‑Hand 1:... 🔹 Why Piaffe Fails Without In-Hand Work: • The Mysteries of Piaffe: Richard Williams ... 🔹 The ORIGINAL Half Halt according to La Guérinière Reveals | Inside Rein Explained: • The ORIGINAL Half Halt according to La Gué... 🔹 Dressage Is Only 2 Easy Patterns!: • Dressage Is Only 2 Easy Patterns! 🗂️ Playlists: The Old Masters of Dressage – From Ancient to Modern: • The Old Masters of Dressage - History - an...
