Evil Dead Burn has arrived and what is interesting is not that it delivers the expected gore, although it certainly does that with the enthusiasm of a butcher who discovered performance art. It’s that it continues the modern films’ move away from slapstick and toward family horror. This is still an Evil Dead film, so of course people are attacked with fish hooks, corkscrews, gardening equipment, dishwashers, dentures, jackhammers, and whatever else happens to be lying around. But beneath the carnage sits an uncomfortable story about domestic abuse, family loyalty, denial, grief, enabling, and the corrosive decay of a family that was already spiritually possessed before the demons showed up.
