A brief introduction to yin: Postures are similar to some ‘yang’ asanas but held in a passive way over an extended period of time (usually between 3-5 mins). Keep the muscles in the targeted area relaxed. We are not working on the muscles, but on the connective tissue of the body (deeper fascial network, tendons, ligaments, bones, joints). In every posture find your edge (where you first feel a change in the tissue when coming into a posture), stay there in stillness (stillness of the body, the breath and the mind) and hold the posture for the whole duration. Use props only when needed. Yin yoga is not about being comfortable and relaxed. We are seeking to stress the body (the targeted areas); this involves discomfort. Only make use of props to help you feel the stress in the targeted area, let gravity do the rest. The class is suitable for all levels of practitioners. Listen to your body carefully to decided how deep you want to go into a posture. Make the asanas work for you, use props where needed, make adjustments or come out of the posture if your body is telling you to do so. I am only giving minimal verbal instructions. Most people like to listen to slow music as it helps them to dive even deeper into relaxation. See you on the mat my beautiful yoga friends.
