Thanks to investments in new rolling stock and infrastructure modernization, rail has become a convenient and environmentally friendly alternative to road transport. Koleje Wielkopolskie also contributes to the region's integration, improving access to jobs, education, and culture. In this way, rail remains an important part of the lives of the residents of Wielkopolska. Kieje Wielkopolskie was established on September 28, 2009, by the Wielkopolska Voivodeship government and provides regional transport services in the Wielkopolska Voivodeship and partially in the Lower Silesian, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Lubusz, and Łódź Voivodeships. Koleje Wielkopolskie began regular passenger services in 2011, initially on a few lines. Over time, the company's scope of operations gradually expanded, encompassing more and more connections in the region. Wielkopolskie Railways Ltd. was entered into the National Court Register on February 22, 2010, but its actual operations began on August 27, when the regional government purchased 12 used EN57 series electric multiple units from Pesa Bydgoszcz. Wielkopolskie Railways does not have its own rolling stock, except for the 48WE Elf II electric vehicles and the 36WEh diesel vehicles. The carrier uses rolling stock owned by the Wielkopolska Voivodeship. Currently, Wielkopolskie Railways transport passengers on 16 lines and ended 2024 with a record 18.5 million passengers, an increase of 1.7 million compared to the previous year.
