Days of relentless rain bring flash floods to central Texas

Amy Wilmeth reports on a range of severe weather conditions affecting the U.S. Currently, southern Texas is enduring significant flash flooding, with rainfall totals exceeding a foot in some areas, particularly west of San Antonio. This flooding is caused by a slow-moving area of low pressure, which is expected to bring days of relentless rain, putting millions at risk of further flooding. Meanwhile, the Northeast faces an unusual severe weather threat, rated a level three out of five. Tornado risks are present in states where such events are uncommon, signaling a potentially dangerous situation as the region braces for volatile weather conditions. In total, around 82 million people across various regions are under a flood risk today. Compounding these challenges, an expansive heat alert is impacting 127 million people nationwide, with record high temperatures anticipated in northern plains, Great Lakes, and Northeast regions. The situation is exacerbated by ongoing wildfires in Canada, resulting in poor air quality due to smoke migrating southward. As wildfire smoke heads toward the northeastern U.S., officials encourage residents to remain informed and vigilant amidst these multi-faceted weather threats.
