Voyage au Pays du Coquelicot : Albert et la Mémoire de la Bataille de la Somme 1916

Join us as we delve into the history of the Battle of the Somme in 1916! This first episode of our Journey to the Land of Poppies takes us to the Albert region, a martyred and emblematic city of the Great War, and to its memorial sites. From the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Brebières (nicknamed the "Lourdes of the North") to discovering the famous Potez 36 aircraft in the reconstructed train station, we explore Albert's resilience. We then set off on foot and by mountain bike along the Remembrance Trail to discover the Mametz Dragon Memorial and the vast Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries. This journey is also a time for sharing and discovering local traditions, such as tasting the delicious Gâteau Battu (a type of hard cake)! On the program for this first episode: A visit to Albert: Its town hall, its train station, The legend of the Golden Virgin of its Basilica, An immersion in the underground galleries of the Somme 1916 Museum, The secrets of the Public Garden, a haven of peace, On the front line of the Battle of the Somme 1916: The Monument to McCrae's Scottish Battalion in Contalmaison, The Tank Memorial, the Animal Memorial, the windmill site in Pozières, The Welsh Memorial at Mametz: the Welsh Dragon, The Anglo-French Memorial at Thiepval and the Ulster Tower, The Newfoundland Memorial at Beaumont-Hamel. Why is the poppy the global symbol of Remembrance? We'll tell you everything!
