The first issue of Frigidaire was released on October 28, 1980, and was presented during the Lucca Comics Festival. The press conference was attended by everyone: Vincenzo Sparagna, Andrea Pazienza, Stefano Tamburini, Tanino Liberatore, Filippo Scozzari, and Massimo Mattioli. Joining them, however, was an old friend: heroin. It was with this calling card that Frigidaire introduced itself to the world and the city of Lucca. The first issue of Frigidaire was born from a trip to New York—"in search of the hallmarks of the 1980s"—and contains much of the imagery and stories it would continue to tell in its early years. From Andrea Pazienza's illustrations to Tamburini and Liberatore's Ranxerox, from an interest in alternative sexualities to the raw documentation of marginalization and new metropolitan cultures. A tale of the world that anticipates our present and has the flavor of prophecy.
