The Complicated History of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (And Why Diagnosis Is Still So Hard)

If Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes have been documented for over 100 years, why are so many people still fighting for a diagnosis today? This EDS & HSD awareness month I wanted to make a video diving into the complicated history of Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD), from the earliest medical descriptions to the modern diagnostic criteria. We’ll talk about: • Early descriptions of EDS and hypermobility • Edvard Ehlers and Henri-Alexandre Danlos • Why the condition became so misunderstood • The Beighton score and hypermobility testing • Joint Hypermobility Syndrome vs hEDS • The Berlin and Villefranche classifications • The 2017 EDS criteria changes • Why diagnosis is still so difficult • The upcoming 2026 criteria updates • Why awareness and education still matter One of the biggest misconceptions about EDS is that it’s “trendy” or newly discovered. In reality, this is a condition medicine has repeatedly recognised, reclassified, misunderstood, and debated for decades. This video is not medical advice, just an educational deep dive based on my interpretation of published medical history and research as someone living with and hEDS diagnosis.
