This year, “A Narrative Art History of the Renaissance" returns for a second season. Season 2 will take you through the 15th century, covering the period 1420 to 1500 in seven chapters - tracing the birth and development of the Renaissance in Italy, Flanders, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, and beyond. This series aims to present Renaissance art in coherent context rather than as a disconnected collection of facts and artworks to be memorized. The focus here is not on individual artworks - although in-depth analyses of specific works are featured, too - but on the bigger picture of the Renaissance, foregrounding cross-cultural influences and artistic dialogues. It requires little to no background in art history. 0:00 E4 recap, E5 intro 1:50 Venice & Byzantium Gentile Bellini, Cardinal Bessarion with the Bessarion Reliquary 4:56 Venice & Ethiopia Nicolò Brancaleon, Virgin and Child Ethiopian diptych of St. George and the Virgin and Child 7:18 Michele Giambono, Man of Sorrows 9:05 The Bellini dynasty Jacopo Bellini’s sketchbook Mantegna/Bellini family tree 11:32 Mantegna/Bellini, Presentation at the Temple 15:03 Mantegna/Bellini, Agony in the Garden 19:19 Mantegna, Camera degli Sposi 22:46 Mantegna, Triumphs of Caesar 26:05 Mantegna’s allegories for Isabella d’Este Leonardo da Vinci, Isabella d’Este Mantegna, Minerva Expelling the Vices from the Garden of Virtue 29:21 Gian Marco Cavalli, “Mantuan Roundel” 32:33 Giovanni Bellini: colore Giovanni Bellini, Madonna and Child Giovanni Bellini, Christ Blessing 36:59 Behaim Beaker 38:15 Carpaccio, Legend of St. Ursula 42:16 Gentile Bellini at the Ottoman court Gentile Bellini, Sultan Mehmed II Gentile Bellini, Seated Scribe 47:08 Orientalism in Venice Gentile Bellini, Virgin and Child Enthroned Gentile and Giovanni Bellini, St. Mark Preaching in Alexandria Gentile Bellini workshop, Reception of Venetian Ambassadors at Damascus 50:40 Mantegna, Lamentation over the Dead Christ 52:30 Mantegna/Bellini: legacies Mantegna, Introduction of the Cult of Cybele at Rome Giovanni Bellini, The Continence of Scipio 55:22 E6 preview All content created, edited, written, and produced by Weili Jin, 2024 An initiative of The Close Looking Project Visit https://closelooking.org/ to learn more
