Un amanecer de fuego en el Fitz Roy | El Chaltén Pt.1
We hiked 12 kilometers and climbed almost 1,000 meters to see a sunrise we nearly missed. The forecast predicted cloudy skies until dawn, and the plan was to stay in the tent. But I set off at 3:00 AM, saw Fitz Roy clear, and we headed towards Laguna de los Tres. This is the first video in the El Chaltén series, in Argentine Patagonia. We camped in Poincenot, tried to reach Laguna Sucia through the remote area of Los Glaciares National Park (we didn't make it, but we found a spot that hardly anyone goes), passed by Cascada Escondida, which is just off the main trail, and the next day we took a chance on sunrise at one of the most iconic views in Argentina. If you're planning to do it, here are some practical tips: The Fitz Roy trail is probably the most popular in Argentina, so it's best to go during the shoulder season (Autumn/Spring) or very early in the morning. To camp in Poincenot, you must register online beforehand and respect the rules: no fires, food, or trash inside the tent. The final climb to Laguna de los Tres is approximately 400 meters of elevation gain in the last kilometer. It's the tough part, but it's worth it. To see the sunrise, you have to start at 3 AM from Poincenot, or even 1 AM from the town (between 1.5 and 2 hours of climbing in the dark, don't forget your headlamp!). Laguna Sucia and the river area are remote areas: you must notify the National Parks Service before going.
