Three weeks later, she was found emaciated and injured on the side of County Road 17 in Yolo County, 150 miles away. Initially claiming abduction by two Hispanic women, Papini's story unraveled over years of investigation. A DNA match to an ex-boyfriend, James Reyes, led to revelations that she had fabricated the abduction. In March 2022, Papini pleaded guilty to making false statements and mail fraud, admitting to staging the kidnapping for attention and financial gain. Despite shifting narratives, including allegations against Reyes, the case has sparked debate on mental health and credibility, with Papini's actions criticized for wasting resources and misleading the public. She has recently presented a new narrative in an HBO Max Docuseries called “Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie” that has people asking even more questions. Who can you trust?
