In this video we will show how to use a multimeter to test voltages on the power supply board, to help determine if the no backlights on this TV is being caused by the power supply or a bad LED or multiple bad LEDs. In this video we will show three different scenarios and what the troubleshooting steps should be and the recommended solution to fix the problem, based on the troubleshooting. We will show troubleshooting steps on a LIVE TV. In these troubleshooting steps, we will use a multimeter to check for certain voltages. In order to continue troubleshooting, be sure you have the proper training, experience, skills and equipment necessary to use a multimeter to check voltages in the TV. Try all repairs and troubleshooting at your own risk as this can be very dangerous. The power supply connection here, runs from the power supply to the LEDs. There is only one test point on this power supply, as there is only one connection. Some power supplies will have multiple test points. Before testing, you will want to plug in the TV and power it on. Then place the red probe in the side with the red wire, and the black probe in the side with the white wire. In the first test, I get a reading of 205 volts. This shows that the power supply and the LEDs are functioning properly and there is no problem. In the second test, I get a reading of around zero volts. This shows that there is most likely a problem with the power supply, but we can continue testing, to be sure. Next, I will turn off the TV and unplug it from the wall. Then disconnect the cable at the connection and retest with the TV plugged in and powered on. In the image on the screen, we are showing how to test this connection, without it plugged in. When retesting without the plug, if you get zero volts, then it is recommended to replace the power supply. If you get a reading other than zero volts, it is recommended to replace the LEDs. We will test the connection for a third time. In the third test, I get a reading of 300 volts. This shows that there is most likely a problem with the LEDs, but we will continue testing to be sure. Once again, turn off the TV and unplug it. Disconnect the cable at the connection and retest with the TV plugged in and powered on. If you still get a reading of around 300 volts, that means the problem is with the LEDs and it is recommended to replace them. If you get a reading at zero volts, then it is recommended to replace the power supply. TV Repair Made Easy™ © 2016 ShopJimmy.com, LLC.
