Greenhouse smart farming becomes a lifeline for families in Baidoa, Somalia

In Baidoa, where internally displaced communities live side by side with vulnerable host communities, a powerful story of resilience and empowerment is taking root. In Bonkaay village, on the outskirts of the Baidoa City, we are supporting 200 vulnerable female-headed households, organized into 20 farmers’ associations, through an innovative hydroponic smart farming initiative, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). By introducing hydroponic farming, a climate-resilient method that uses up to 90% less water than traditional agriculture, this initiative enables families to adapt to harsh environmental conditions while building sustainable livelihoods. Through year-round vegetable production, these women are not only improving food security but also earning a dignified income to support their children and strengthen their families’ futures. This is more than farming; it’s hope, independence, and a pathway to lasting change.
