I Built Buggies for 40 Years and Never Told My Wife the Truth About Our Wedding Night

The last buggy I built was a courting rig. Two-seater. Black, as they all were, but I finished the interior in a pale oak because the young man who commissioned it told me his girl had admired the color once in a woodworking catalogue she was not supposed to have seen. He wanted her to know he had listened. I shaped the bench myself, fitted the boot board, ran my hand along every seam before I let it leave the shop. It was March and the air in the barn came in cold through the gaps in the siding, and I stood there in my coat holding a lantern over the finished thing, and I thought: I made something honest.
