Last week, there were changes in the police leadership: Interior Minister Carlos Negro removed Montevideo's Chief of Police, Pablo Lotito, and the Director of the Republican Guard, Angelina Ferreira, from their posts. Furthermore, Alfredo Clavijo, the former Deputy Director of the National Police, took over as head of the capital's police force, while Chief Commissioner Fabián Monzón became head of the Republican Guard. Lotito will be the new Director of Police Investigations, replacing Julio Sena, who will, in turn, become Deputy Director of the National Police. In a press conference, Negro stated that the changes are based on the ministry's constant monitoring of the police structure's operations, a commitment made by the government within the framework of the National Public Security Plan. The opposition, however, asserted that these moves demonstrate the government's "failing" in security.
