Don't Think That You're Special | Jantelagen, The Law of Jante - Scandinavia's Hidden Law

Sweden, and Scandinavia in general, has a phenomenom called Jantelagen, the Law of Jante. It's a code of conduct for how to behave in the Scandinavian countries, and it can be summed up in one sentence: don't think that you're anything special. In this video I dive into the history of Jantelagen, from its roots in 1933 when a Norwegian author called Aksel Sandemose took inspiration from a Danish town to create the fictional village of Jante. This village had a set of rules that you had to abide to - and they were presented in a sarcastic and exaggerated manner. But there was still a kernel of truth hidden there. Jantelagen became extremely popular in Scandinavia, and it describes how you're supposed to behave. You're expected to be humble and to not criticize your peers. You're expected to fit in and to follow the rest of society. And it's something that's been ridiculed by many - while others nod in agreement and say that this does describe Scandinavia perfectly. I also explore how Jantelagen fits in with impostor syndrome, and how Sweden has a strange duality of individualism and wanting to fit in. The country produces a large number of ambitious and creative people - while it still encourages everyone to know their place and never grow too big. All of this is filmed at DreamHack, one of the biggest gaming conventions in the world. Why? There's a reason - but you'll have to watch the video to find out!
