What if Stannis Baratheon Allied with Robb Stark? Let’s get into the depths of it in the video. Stannis Baratheon sits in his war council, staring out at the map of Westeros. The various armies warring throughout the seven kingdoms are displayed on the table. Melisandre whispers into Stannis’ ear, telling him to sail towards the stormlands, that the power of her red god will give him the strength to defeat his brother if he continues to parade as a King. Ser Davos stands at the far side of the map, moving pieces around the board as reports of Robb Stark’s victory at Oxcross lie on the table. Stannis walks around the table, passing the Northern castles that were taken in the Ironborn invasion. Stannis Baratheon: Ser Davos, what do you think of the king in the north? Ser Davos: He shows the Honor of a Northman. The boy is fighting to avenge his father, after all. Stannis Baratheon: Ned Stark was the only man to recognise my claim. Of all the kings, this boy has the most righteous cause. Ser Davos: He’s a brilliant commander, too, your grace. He’s winning every one of his battles. I suppose he could use some help with politics. Stannis Baratheon: I agree, letting the Greyjoy boy return to his family alone was foolish. He’s in the weakest position, victories or not, and he’s refusing to bend the knee for me. Ser Davos: I beg your pardon, your grace, but his family hasn’t been treated well in the south. Look at his grandfather and uncle, Stark’s have been killed in King's Landing for generations. He has a good reason to want independence for his people. Stannis can’t argue with the logic of his Hand. Despite his reservations, a plan begins to formulate in his head, revolving around the undefended coast of the Westerlands and the Iron Islands. He writes a letter to the king in the north, detailing his plan. He grits his teeth as he writes his terms, agreeing to acknowledge the independence of the North if certain concessions are agreed upon, such as a mutual defense pact and trading tariffs that would heavily benefit the crown during winter. The Raven flies as the Sun rises from beneath the narrow sea, travelling over the fierce battles between Rivermen and Westermen all across the Red Fork. Lord Tywin spreads his host wide and tries to force a crossing in a dozen different locations. Edmure Tully, however, denies Tywin, holding the river and beating the Westernmen back. Stannis’s raven reaches Robb Stark as he prepares to leave Ashemark. Robb eagerly agrees to Stannis’ terms, sending his reply alongside letters to his allies and bannermen. One letter flies to Edmure, requesting as many men as he can spare, and the second to Roose Bolton, commanding him not to take his forces to Harrenhal, but to replace the rivermen at the Trident. Roose follows his orders, disgruntled that he can’t find a way to sabotage Robb’s plans. The Lord of the Dreadfort was secretly aiding Tywin, hoping to gain more power in the north once Robb was killed. Roose was planning to take his men deep into the Crownlands, where he could sacrifice a large portion of them in battle with tywin host. He writes to Tywin, detailing the changes in his orders, and delivers the message to his Maester, already sealed. He tells the Maester that the message regards prisoner exchanges and leaves it at that. In King’s Landing, Tyrion Lannister sits at a particularly boring small council meeting. The acting hand, having just sent his niece to Dorne for a marriage alliance, zones out Grand Maester Pycelle, who reads a report on the city's food shortages. Tyrion refocuses as Varys informs the council that Stannis Baratheon had left Dragonstone. Tyrion Lannister: Shut up, Pycelle. Varys, where is he going? Varys: My little birds have told me that Stannis was last seen sailing south. As to his destination, we will find that out when he arrives there. Littlefinger: Perhaps he’s moved to ally with Renly, although I doubt Renly will put his claim aside. Tyrion Lannister: Stannis is still a threat to us by himself; he commands half the Royal Fleet. Varys: I’ll have my spies watch for Stannis’ ships, but I have to concur with Lord Baelish. Reports of Renly’s army amassing at Bitterbridge are troublesome at worst. #gameofthrones #gameofthroneswhatif #whatif
