Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced plans to change the law so freed Rochdale grooming gang ringleader Shabir Ahmed can be deported. Ahmed was stripped of British citizenship after his conviction but remains protected by a decades-old rule covering some Commonwealth citizens who arrived before 1973. The proposed amendment would remove that protection from serious foreign criminals, although Pakistan must still agree to accept him. Ministers say they are exploring every option as victims remain frightened by his release.
