The Handline Hero (Catch & Cook)

Remote Gulf reef fishing with mates, big laughs, a $15 hand line, and cooking our catch to top it all off. "Catch & Cook" When the mud crabs are off the chew, it’s time to go old school. The commercial mud crabbing season has kicked off slow up here in the Gulf of Carpentaria, so me (Mikey Cunningham), King Ash, and our mate Youngboy—commercial crabbers in the Territory—decided to change it up. We ditched the pots and hit the water for a day of reef fishing out at the Pellew Islands. Joining us in a second boat were Shredder and Mick, making it a proper boys' trip out of King Ash Bay Fishing Club, cruising down the McArthur River and into the Gulf. But here’s the twist: while the others fished with their expensive rods and flash reels, I went full primitive—raw dogging it with a $15 hand line. And would you believe it, The "Hand Line Hero" cleaned up! I landed as many, or more fish than the rest of them and even pulled in some of the best fish of the day. Meanwhile, Youngboy—an absolute wizard at mud crabbing—proved that fishing might not exactly be his superpower. The bloke had us in stitches the whole day. We didn’t catch any monsters, but we brought home a solid feed. A few Golden Snapper, a Nannygai, and some good yarns to go with them. The next day we did a "catch and cook" at Mick’s place with the whole crew. I took over the "khteah" (watch the video and you'll understand) and cooked up the fresh reefies for a laidback feed with the boys.
