In this biographical documentary, Étienne Beaumont retraces the extraordinary life of Boris Pasternak, one of the greatest Russian poets of the twentieth century, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1958 and author of the novel Doctor Zhivago. Born in 1890 into a Moscow household where Tolstoy came for tea and where Scriabin played the piano for hours on end, Boris Pasternak grew up surrounded by geniuses without yet knowing that he would become one himself. The documentary explores his entire life story in ten parts: the two rejections that forced him toward poetry, his early creative years during the Bolshevik Revolution, his complex relationship with Mayakovsky, Stalin's late-night phone call, the Great Terror and the successive disappearances of his friends, his love for Olga Ivinskaya, who inspired the character of Lara, the clandestine writing of Doctor Zhivago, the novel's publication in Italy, the harassment campaign that followed the Nobel Prize, and finally, his last months in Peredelkino, culminating in a funeral that, despite everything, became an act of collective resistance. This documentary film draws on rigorous historical and biographical sources to offer a nuanced portrait of a man who was neither a barricade hero nor a mere survivor, but something rarer: a poet who refused to silence his own voice in an era when that voice could cost his life.
