What's the difference between them? Let's go! PROPHYLAXIS It's a more detailed brushing. A prophylactic brush (Robson brush) is used. Prophylactic paste is used - with a higher fluoride content, important for protecting the enamel and also more abrasive, stain remover. It only removes bacterial plaque (food debris and colonies of bacteria in the initial stage of formation). If plaque is not removed, it calcifies, forming tartar. It calcifies in just 3 days, forming calculus. Calculus can no longer be removed with a toothbrush. It then needs to be scraped off with curettes and other scaling instruments. Calculus is extremely hard; it needs to be removed by scaling and the surface smoothed to prevent bacterial plaque from adhering again. SCALING Periodontal curettes, coronal planing. Ultrasound. CLEANING This term can be confusing because people usually have both problems: plaque and calculus. So the cleaning I usually do here at the clinic is complete, with these two steps. WHAT PROBLEM TODAY? Normally, people let too much time pass before having a complete cleaning procedure. Then the plaque evolves into calculus and tartar. This tartar gradually penetrates the gums over time and silently reabsorbs the supporting bone of the tooth (i.e., it "eats" away at the bone), which damages the tooth's support in the long term. WHAT DOES TARTAR CAUSE? ONE: Tooth mobility TWO: Bone loss, with the appearance of black triangles. THREE: Appearance of black triangles, exposed roots, and bone loss, which makes the smile look aged. FOUR: Bad breath. HOW TO PREVENT IT? By having a complete preventive cleaning at least every 6 months. Because this is a silent disease, and it's not always possible to realize you have the problem. Pay attention to the warning signs. Bleeding gums when brushing is a sign of active gum inflammation. You need to go to the dentist immediately and keep up with your cleanings. ********************** Appointment Scheduling.
