Familles Alliées: The Hidden Power Behind Swiss Watchmaking Dynasties
Discover the hidden power behind Swiss watchmaking dynasties: the Familles Alliées. In this video, I explore how strategic family alliances shaped success in the Swiss watch industry during the 19th century. These connections were not just personal; they formed the foundation of thriving watchmaking empires. At the center of this story is the Montandon–Blaiselion family, a key force behind renowned enterprises such as Montandon Frères (Paris & Le Locle) and other influential ventures. We take a closer look at the Blaiselion lineage of La Chaux-de-Fonds, tracing the family line from Charles-Frédéric to his son Charles, then to Jules-Henri, and onward to his children Charles-Oscar and Charlotte-Juliette. A pivotal moment comes in 1882, when Charlotte-Juliette marries Théobald Zumkehr-Montandon, further strengthening ties between two important watchmaking families. We also uncover a fascinating lost treasure from the early 1880s, recently rediscovered, and examine its connection to Théobald Zumkehr-Montandon and the wider Montandon dynasty. This research would not have been possible without the invaluable contributions of the following sources: • Musée neuchâtelois (including contributions by Michel Wyss) for data on Charles Montandon-Blaiselion and his urban improvements in La Chaux-de-Fonds • Mikrolisk – The horological trade mark index (poinçons): http://www.mikrolisk.de/ • Swiss Davoine Almanac entries (1886 to 1896), preserved across original issues • Business correspondence of Montandon Frères (Le Locle) by David-Henri Montandon-Blaiselion, from the archives of the Musée international d'horlogerie, La Chaux-de-Fonds • Théobald Zumkehr-Montandon patent documentation via https://watch-movements.eu/ • Genealogical records from Geneanet.com • Frédéric-Jules Montandon, Les Montandon (1913) This is a deep dive into heritage, craftsmanship, and the powerful role of family alliances in shaping horological history. #SwissWatchmaking #FamillesAlliees #Horology #WatchHistory #Montandon #LaChauxDeFonds
