Prince Arthas Menethil and the mage Jaina Proudmoore investigated the plague and confronted the necromancer Kel'Thuzad. Learning that the plague turned people into the undead, Arthas purged the infected city of Stratholme. Arthas then journeyed to Northrend, obtained the cursed blade Frostmourne, and fell under the Lich King's sway, becoming a death knight. He returned to Lordaeron, slew his father King Terenas, and led the Scourge to destroy the high elven kingdom of Quel'Thalas to resurrect Kel'Thuzad as a lich. With Kel'Thuzad revived, they summoned the demon Archimonde and the Burning Legion to Azeroth. Meanwhile, the prophet Medivh warned the young orc Warchief Thrall to lead the Horde to Kalimdor. Thrall's friend Grom Hellscream succumbed to demon blood again, but redeemed himself by slaying the pit lord Mannoroth, freeing the orcs at the cost of his life. Medivh also brought Jaina Proudmoore and the human survivors to Kalimdor. The night elves, led by Malfurion Stormrage and Tyrande Whisperwind, awoke from their long slumber to fight the Legion. Tyrande freed Malfurion's brother Illidan Stormrage to aid them. Illidan gained demonic powers by consuming the Skull of Gul'dan, slaying the dreadlord Tichondrius but leading to his banishment by Malfurion. Under Medivh's guidance, Thrall and Jaina allied with the night elves for a final stand against Archimonde at Mount Hyjal. Malfurion used the power of Nordrassil, the World Tree, to destroy Archimonde, sacrificing the night elves' immortality in the process.
