The History of Kumawu & Papa Nantwie Festival

Kumawu is one of the important traditional towns in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. It is the capital of the Kumawu Traditional Area and an important part of the Asante Kingdom. The people of Kumawu belong to the Asante ethnic group and share the same history and traditions with the rest of Asanteman. Many years ago, before the Asante Kingdom was formed, several Akan states lived separately. At that time the powerful Denkyira Kingdom controlled many of these states. Denkyira forced them to pay heavy tribute and treated them with great pressure. Because of this, the Akan states began to seek freedom. Around the late seventeenth century, Osei Tutu brought many Akan states together to form the Asante union. Okomfo Anokye, the great priest and spiritual leader, helped him spiritually in this mission. Kumawu was one of the important states that supported this union. During the preparation for the war against Denkyira, Okomfo Anokye consulted the gods. The message he received was that the Asante people could only win the war if a great chief sacrificed his life for the nation. Nana Tweneboa Kodua the chief of Kumawu bravely offered himself for this sacrifice. He accepted to give his life so that the Asante people could gain their freedom. He was sent to the battlefield and was instructed not to fire his gun. Because he did not fight back, the enemy killed him. His sacrifice fulfilled the prophecy. Not long after his death, the Asante army defeated the Denkyira Kingdom in the famous Battle of Feyiase. This victory led to the rise of the powerful Asante Kingdom. To remember the bravery and sacrifice of Nana Tweneboa Kodua, the people of Kumawu began celebrating the Papa Nantwie Festival. The Papa Nantwie Festival is celebrated every year in Kumawu. It is a festival that teaches bravery, sacrifice, and loyalty to the nation. One of the main events of the festival is a bravery test where a cow is slaughtered and placed in an open space. Young men rush to cut a piece of the meat and try to carry it away while others whip them. Anyone who succeeds is seen as a very brave person. The festival also includes traditional drumming, dancing, and a gathering of chiefs and elders. It brings people together to remember their history and honor the ancestors. Today the Papa Nantwie Festival remains one of the most important festivals in Kumawu. It reminds the people of the courage and sacrifice that helped build the Asante Kingdom.
