What is the signified in Jacques Lacan's psychoanalysis? Why is meaning never final? How does meaning emerge in speech? And why can the same word mean completely different things? In this lecture, we will examine one of the central concepts of Lacanian psychoanalysis: the signified. Through reference to Ferdinand de Saussure's linguistics, Jacques Lacan's seminars, and the logic of the signifier, we will examine the distinction between the signifier and the signified, the structure of the unconscious as language, the slipperiness of meaning, the instability of meaning, and the mechanism by which the signified emerges in speech. Special attention will be given to the distinction between the sign, the trace, and the signifier, as well as how meaning is formed retroactively within the chain of signifiers. The lecture will examine examples from Lacan's seminars, the structure of S1 → S2, the point de capiton, and the question of why the signifier does not simply signify absence but produces it.
