Tatra 603 - Die tschechische Lokomotive. Luxus mit Achtzylinder-Motor

In the 1950s, the production of luxury passenger cars was seen as urgently needed in Czechoslovakia, as the few imported large Soviet sedans, such as the GAZ-12, were unpopular due to their lack of performance and initially poor build quality. In 1956, the Tatra 603 was presented to the public both domestically and internationally for the first time. In West Germany, it even received an award for its contemporary design. Initially, the engine produced 95 hp, later increased to 105 hp, enabling the large vehicle to reach speeds of up to 165 km/h. Despite its rear-wheel drive, the Tatra 603 had a remarkably even weight distribution, with 53% of the vehicle's weight resting on the rear axle. Despite its advanced age, spare parts are still readily available, although exceptions are the rule. A 1964 test report by KFT criticized the Tatra for its originally sporty engine, which clashed with the swing-axle suspension design, thus severely limiting its sporty driving characteristics. The Tatra exhibited a significant tendency to oversteer and proved susceptible to crosswinds. The interior appeared surprisingly basic for a diplomatic vehicle, and the noise level, particularly in the rear, was not suitable for official travel.
