The End of Climate Horror? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Abolishes Its Worst-Case Scenario! For years, it was the bogeyman of the climate debate: the so-called RCP 8.5 scenario – a world with global warming of up to 5.5 degrees Celsius, a tripling of CO₂ emissions, and apocalyptic consequences for billions of people. Thousands of scientific studies were based on it, the German government built its climate policy on it, and even the Federal Constitutional Court cited it in its landmark climate ruling in 2021. Now, that's over. 44 leading climate scientists have officially deemed the horror scenario implausible and removed it from the new IPCC report. What remains is a new worst-case scenario – significantly less dramatic, but also considerably more realistic. What's behind this decision?
