At the height of the Cold War, the Italian Army planned to build numerous fallout shelters to protect infantry from the effects of tactical nuclear weapons that might be used along the Eastern Front. However, only one of those shelters was actually built. The bunker was built near the Dignano Bridge, along the Tagliamento River, in one of the areas military plans considered possible invasion routes for Warsaw Pact forces. The project was later abandoned. After the Cold War ended, the shelter was sealed and forgotten. For over thirty years, no one entered it again. In this video, we descend seven meters underground to explore every room of the bunker, reconstruct its history, and understand why the Italian Army deemed it necessary to build such a structure. Through exclusive images, period photographs, and an interview with the general who promoted its restoration, we retrace a little-known chapter in Italian defense during the Cold War. We will also discover: • the role of the Infantry Regiment in the defense of Friuli; • how Italy prepared for a possible NATO-Warsaw Pact conflict; • what tactical nuclear weapons and WMD (Atomic Demolition Munitions) were; • why the fallout shelter project was suddenly halted; • how the bunker was rediscovered after decades of abandonment.
