From 1994 to 2001, a largely single-track S-Bahn line to Roth was built parallel to the Nuremberg-Treuchtlingen line. Prior to this, SE trains operated with the Class 141 and n-cars. Since the S-Bahn's commissioning, the Class 143 with x-cars has operated there. Until 2010, it operated under the name S3; since then, it has been known as the S2.
