Typically growing to 60–75 cm tall and wide, it is an evergreen, shrubby plant widely cultivated for the highly decorative variegated leaves found in cultivated varieties. The leaves of coleus cultivars vary in color, from pale yellow to dark purple; in variegation, from nearly a single color to many colors; in shape, from symmetrical to irregular, from broad to narrow, and from toothed to lobed margins. The leaves of cultivars typically display marked contrasts between their colors; individual leaves can be various shades of green, pink, yellow, "black" (a very dark purple), brown, cream, white, and red (somewhat resembling the unrelated Caladium). Leaf shape also varies, from broadly ovate to more narrowly lanceolate.
