The Armenian Ararat Brandy Factory is once again releasing its famous Otborny cognac. This cognac is now actually older, part of a collector's series. Ararat Otborny can rightfully be considered a legend in the Armenian cognac industry. Many will argue, citing Dvin or Nairi, but it was Otborny that began the history of the Yerevan Brandy Factory back in the 19th century. Shustov, the owner of the factory at the time, produced a cognac he didn't hesitate to call Fine Champagne Otborny. Today, many liberal connoisseurs argue that cognac grows in the mythical province of Cognac, but back then, they even borrowed the name of the Fine Champagne appellation. So, Shustov released Fine Champagne Otborny and sent it to a competition in France, the birthplace of cognac. The tasting was blind (a real one, not in front of a YouTube camera), the experts drank a variety of cognacs, and awarded the Grand Prix to a cognac from Yerevan. It was a shock, of course. Shustov didn't stop there and launched an amazing advertising campaign across Europe, even serving a glass of cognac to Tsar Nicholas himself at the World's Fair. The Tsar didn't like cognac, but he had to drink for the honor of his country, so he drank a lemon. Thus began one of the most lousy cognac-drinking traditions. Years passed, the Russian Empire transformed into the Soviet Union, and Ararat Otborny cognac found a new life. No longer a champagne house or a French Grand Prix, but with the well-deserved respect of cognac connoisseurs. It wasn't yet as expensive as Vaspurakan and Nairi, but it was already noticeably better than 3- and 5-star brands. Independent Armenia also produced Ararat Otborny, but then the French from Pernod Ricard came and bought the Ararat distillery. Apparently, someone had the nerve to remind them of the history of this cognac, and they couldn't pass up the opportunity to destroy the cognac that had beaten their favorites in a fair competition. Otborny was discontinued several years ago. However, people can't be fooled; no seven-year-old Ani can replace Otborny, and the French were forced to resurrect the beloved cognac.
