The Story of Davis Marble Works with Ron Shepherd
Davis Marble Works was a short-lived glass toy marbles company from Pennsboro, West Virginia from 1947-1948. They purchased their machine from Corning Glass in 1946, the machine was originally owned by Alley Agate . In this video we film with Ron Shepherd, David Tamulevich, Sammy Hogue and Michael Johnson to discuss the history of the factory, the May 2002 dig of the property grounds, and detailed identifications of their marbles. There are examples from six different Davis collections In this upload . The Davis Marble Works marbles are widely considered among the rarest of the West Virginia swirl marbles today. Many of there marbles are Indistinguishable from neighboring companies of that era : Cairo Novelty, Jackson Marbles, Play-Rite Marbles and Heaton Agates. Since the company was only in operation for approximately one year, their marbles are extremely rare and difficult to find. Most of their marbles were shipped to Puerto Rico, which would be the most likely place to find them today. Davis marble specimens have been known to occasionally show up in random lots at estate sales, flea markets and marble shows In the United States. For detailed information and a terrific marbles reading resource, refer to the Book : “American Machine-Made Marbles” (2006 Six / Metzler / Johnson). This video Is dedicated to the company’s co-owner Wilson Davis (1927-2017) Please visit the “Vintage Marbles Collections” playlist on this channel for more marbles videos .
