The Quranic manuscripts we hold today have a very long and challenging history. Did you know? The Quran didn't immediately take the form of a book as it is today. During the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the verses of the Quran were written separately on various simple materials such as date palm stems, bones, and animal skins. Furthermore, his companions also memorized them thoroughly. Over time, after many Quranic memorizers were killed in the Battle of Yamamah, concerns arose that some verses would be lost. This is how the process of compiling the Quran began during the reign of Caliph Abu Bakr As-Siddiq. Then, during the reign of Caliph Uthman ibn Affan, when Islam had spread widely to various non-Arab regions, differences in the way the Quran was read emerged. To maintain the unity of the ummah, Uthman established a standardized copy of the Quran known as the Uthmani Mushaf—which became the basis for the Quran we read today.
