The electrician uses the caliper to measure the gauge of a cable, check the diameter of drill bits, measure the depth of a motor brush cavity, screw gauge, among others. The caliper is also capable of taking four measurements. See below the names given to these measurements: External measurements; Internal measurements; Depth measurements; Protrusion measurements. If you want to use a caliper correctly, you need to understand its parts. Basically, it has two parts: The fixed part has a millimeter scale in inches, used to compare measurements. The mobile part is also called a vernier, and has the scale that is used to compare and obtain the measurement and its precision. In this video, we show how to use a digital caliper and how a good quality cable can be confused with a poor quality cable. NAMBEI mini handout - https://goo.gl/hYS2WW Are you one of those Brazilians who thinks "the cheaper the better"? Well, as an engineer, I have an obligation to warn you, on a construction site this really doesn't work! In this video, I will give you two tips to avoid getting "scammed" when choosing your electrical cables. In the video, I show two brands of electrical cables, a "pirate" one, also known as "unbitolado" and one that respects the standards and especially its consumer (I show both conductors). The packaging for both says they are 2.5mm², but in practice, if you pick them up and compare them, you can see a big difference. Tip 1: If you look at them in detail, you'll notice two things right away. 1 – Insulation: The “uncorked” conductor has a larger layer of insulating material, but don't be fooled, it doesn't insulate more than the other one because of that. On the contrary, this larger insulation only serves to make it look like a 2.5mm² cable from the outside, just like the other one! 2 – Copper: The second part that we should keep an eye on is the most important, the copper cross-section. To do this, just peel the cable and compare it with a good quality cable. It's clear that this brand that claims to be selling 2.5mm² cable is actually delivering much less than 2mm², which poses a huge risk during installation (I'll use a digital caliper to check the difference in cross-sections). Pirate cables have less copper in their composition, which mainly affects their durability, causes electrical appliances to malfunction, ends up increasing electricity consumption and poses a high risk of fire. Standardized cables have a durability of up to 30 years, do not cause overheating in the network, conduct the amount of current required for their function and do not pose any risk to the installation. 2nd tip: Prioritize cable brands that have been on the market for a long time, after all, bad things cannot last. Check the packaging for certification seals and registrations.
