▶ Spring, a Year After, a Reunion: A Sage from the Mountains Eulsugol, nestled 800 meters above sea level in the rugged mountains of Hongcheon County, Gangwon Province. Despite the limited agricultural potential, I reunited with Jeon Gwang-seo (88), the resident of Eulsugol, and his wife, Lee Bok-sun (83), who lived there without much ambition. The couple continued to grow potatoes and medicinal herbs and tend to their bees. Jeon Gwang-seo, a wise man, was as eloquent as ever. What had changed was the addition of a new family of young swans, badgers, and flycatchers, and a new neighbor had moved in and built a home across the yard. Perhaps a breath of fresh air had blown into the valley everyone had abandoned. The old man was also working on a new home, plowing the soil and planting trees. He called it the Ten Thousand-Year House. Born in Eulsugol and living until he's nearly ninety, he's building a permanent home for himself, a home unique to Eulsugol, so that he can protect it even after he dies. ▶ A simple yet affectionate look There was something else that had changed about the mountain sage. Within minutes of plowing the rocky field, he collapsed. His pace had slowed, and a sigh of regret had grown more frequent. Elder Jeon Gwang-seo gazed at the flowering trees in his yard, planted in his youth, and muttered an uncertain hope: whether he'd be able to care for them again next year. By his frail side, Grandma Bok-sun, as she had been for the past 65 years, follows him like a shadow. Being five years younger, not a sin, requires more work in the fields and around the house, but the mere presence of her white-haired husband provides strength. Through the long, tedious rainy season, through the distant summer nights lit by mosquito coils, and through the deserted holiday mornings, the two are always together. What could that simple, yet tender, affectionate gaze, be if not love? ▶ Love, as told by a mountain sage On a drizzly day, Gwangseo gathers scarlet chrysanthemums in the yard. He intends to present a bouquet to Bok-sun, the love of his life and his benefactor. Their story, which he later discovered, was a strange one. Unable to bear children, the chrysanthemums had been driven by their father's urging to find a new partner. Unaware of this, Bok-sun, believing only in love, had crossed the mountain pass and come to the mountain village. The two chrysanthemums had lived together their entire lives, but only registered their marriage 20 years ago. Spring was late, winter was long, and potatoes were all they had to eat in this deep, remote mountain valley. They had survived all this time because of each other. After another year, and through the four seasons spent with the two chrysanthemums, the production team redefined love.
