Immerse yourself in the heart of the gilding workshop at the Palace of Versailles, which participated in the restoration of the King's bed. This project showcases exceptional craftsmanship. Follow all the steps in this gilding tutorial. In this video, the gilders explain each stage: preparing the wood, applying the primers, the finishing—an essential phase where the ornaments regain their finesse—the successive application of yellow and gesso (colored clay), and finally, the application of the gold leaf. The tempera gilding, executed with precision, creates subtle plays of light between matte and gloss, revealed by burnishing with an agate stone. Finally, the patina harmonizes the whole, blending perfectly with the gilding in the King's bedchamber. This project, carried out over ten months by a team of four artisans, illustrates not only the technical demands of gilding but also the richness of collaborative work.
