Straw Man Army
Straw Man Army – A Ghost Story from the Battle of Big Bethel (1861)This haunting folk ballad tells the story of the first major land battle of the War of 1861 in Virginia from a unique perspective: the "Straw Man" himself. Inspired by a real Union officer’s quote after the battle — they realized they were attacking “a man of straw” (a weak, almost imaginary enemy). The song turns that metaphor into a ghostly, sly recruiter who whispers bad ideas and feeds on confusion. Through friendly fire, panic, and leadership mistakes, the Union army unwittingly recruits itself into the Straw Man’s ranks while the Confederates stay calm and watch. A dark, atmospheric tale of how wars are often lost to our own illusions and mistakes.
