BONNIE AND CLYDE: Platte City Shootout (number 10)
The Platte City shootout at the Red Crown Tavern and cabins was the beginning of the end for Bonnie and Clyde. Again, missteps and bad decisions led to easy detection by locals, who alerted law enforcement. I visited the exact site of the shootout, and do my best to bring the events back to life step by narrative step, in spite of the changed landscape. The area is basically unrecognizable. The gang only spent one night here, and fled to their fate in Dexter, Iowa, which was the end of the road for Buck, Blanche and W.D. Jones, who would never be with the gang again. Bonnie and Clyde lived on for ten months until their luck finally ran out. At least the police adequately prepared (for once), and though three were wounded all lived to tell the tale. #history #bonnieandclyde #barrowgang #plattecitymo #redcrowntavern #greatdepression #crime #lawenforcement
