I Investigated Early Church Finances... Modern Churches Won’t Like the Results

Modern churches spend millions of dollars every year on buildings, staff salaries, and elaborate programs. But is this what the church was originally designed to do? After spending years studying the actual finances of the earliest Christian churches, I found a reality that might make a lot of modern churches very uncomfortable. In this video, we run the exact numbers on modern church operations. For example, the average church receives about 2,816 dollars per attendee , meaning a typical church of 2,000 people operates on an annual budget of millions of dollars. Shockingly, the average medium-sized church spends 45-55% of its budget on staff and another 30-50% on building mortgages and maintenance. This leaves only about 10% for missions and helping the poor. The early church operated completely differently. Earliest Christians met in homes, which meant zero overhead for buildings, and leaders were largely bivocational volunteers who did not take full salaries. According to early church fathers like Irenaeus and Cyprian, Christians gave their money directly to the poor, needy, widows, and orphans. In fact, out of 36 relevant New Testament passages on giving, a massive 75% direct funds toward the poor and needy, while only 25% focus on supporting church operations.
