Wagners Tristan and Isolde, the Prelude to Act I

Wagner’s Prelude to Act I of Tristan und Isolde is one of the most groundbreaking openings in all of classical music. From its very first notes, it creates a world of longing, desire and uncertainty that never fully settles. Rather than offering a clear resolution, Wagner lets the music keep reaching forward, as if it is searching for something it cannot quite attain. He wrote Tristan und Isolde in the late 1850s, inspired by the medieval story of two lovers drawn together by a love potion and doomed by a passion stronger than reason, duty or the world around them. In the Prelude, Wagner captures that emotional intensity before a single word is sung. The music seems to inhale and yearn from the very beginning, which is why this opening still feels so powerful and modern. In this version for string orchestra, Amsterdam Sinfonietta brings that intensity into especially sharp focus. The music itself takes centre stage: transparent, restless and deeply expressive.
