Native fish cam | Saltwater Creek, Cairns QLD

Check out the lively underwater action our OzFish GoPro picked up in Saltwater Creek—Jungle Perch, Feather Bream, Mangrove Jack, Silver Grunter, Rainbow Fish, and Empire Gudgeon are just some of the locals caught on camera. The drains and creeks in urban Cairns are important nurseries for many native fish. OzFish regularly monitors them using mesh traps, electrofishing and camera traps like the one used here. So far, we’ve recorded 55 native fish species. To ensure we see more fish like this, OzFish is restoring 1.5 kms of bankside along Lily and Saltwater Creeks in the heart of Cairns. That means planting native trees, managing weeds and creating better fish passage in the waterways—actions that directly improve fish habitat, water quality and juvenile migrations.
