Harvested in Manisa's Alaşehir district and left to dry in special greenhouses, the demand for the medicinal persimmon fruit is increasing exponentially every year. Exported to many countries, especially Europe, persimmon is practically sold out in the domestic market. Manisa's Alaşehir district, home to the world-famous Sultani seedless raisins and exported to numerous countries, is also renowned for its persimmon fruit. Eight years ago, the cultivation of persimmon began when Melek Yılmaz cultivated it on her balcony and sold it, spreading to the Kavaklıdere neighborhood of Alaşehir. With the neighborhood's farmers also entering the field, production increased. In recent years, persimmon exports to countries like Finland, Germany, France, the UK, and Cyprus have been scarcely sufficient for the domestic market. While demand for persimmon, also known for its use in chocolate production, is struggling to meet demand, this year's yield is expected to reach approximately 350 tons. Persimmons, which sell for 10 euros per kilogram, are the most cultivated product in Alaşehir after grapes. Producer Dursun Uysal noted that the persimmons grown in Manisa's Alaşehir district are distinguished by their flavor and color, and that the Alaşehir region is particularly popular. He added that production, initiated by his niece Melek Yılmaz, has spread throughout the neighborhood. Uysal said, "This story began about eight years ago when my niece Melek Yılmaz dried approximately 40 kilograms of persimmons on her balcony. Later, we started with a greenhouse in a 40-square-meter area. Eight years later, we built an 800-square-meter greenhouse. We can dry and market approximately 70 tons of persimmons in these greenhouses. In recent years, we exported to countries like Finland, Cyprus, France, and Germany. However, as domestic demand increased, we were unable to meet domestic demand, rather than exporting." Uysal, noting that it has begun to be used as a raw material in chocolate production, said, "Most importantly, it has begun to be used as a raw material in the chocolate industry. Last year, we supplied 12 tons to the chocolate factory, and we have committed to a 20-ton demand this year. We are continuing our efforts to further improve it. The persimmon sector has become a significant source of income for this region. A separate business sector has been created, especially for women, to contribute to the household economy. An average of 20 women work every day, and this process takes about a month. We have annual costs, such as fuel, medicine, and labor. Considering these costs, our price expectation for this year is 10 euros. Prices below this would be upsetting. Pistachios are 90-100 lira locally, but they cost 800 lira on the counter. Such a commercial approach will not only harm us but also be ineffective for the workers around us." Uysal stated that the persimmon apple was brought to the region in 1947 by a retired non-commissioned officer, but it was commercially grown thanks to his niece, Melek Yılmaz, who took up the business. He said, "The persimmon apple came to our region in 1946-47. The late retired sergeant major, Şerafettin, who was a local, was attending the non-commissioned officer school in Yalova. There, he saw this fruit and brought back 10 trees. He distributed them to his friends and family. Until 1980, it spread throughout the region in this way, planting one or two trees at a time. Since 1980, it has reached a thousand acres in our region. Last year, the harvest was around 250 tons, and this year we expect around 300-350 tons.
