Chongqing, a multi-tiered city in the Yangtze River basin Chongqing's urban planners took this proverb to heart. When drafting the blueprint for Chongqing, they preserved the large hills, not demolishing them, and built the city on them instead, minimizing long-term environmental impact. Where the Yangtze River curves into the Jialing River, a city emerges from the mountains in cascading layers, like endless terraces of heaven. Perhaps the wonder of Chongqing is the cascading architecture of its buildings on the high mountainsides, or perhaps it's simply our awe at the human potential. who creates works based on natural limitations like this CHONGQING: A MULTI-LEVELED CITY OF THE YANGTZE “This is the old saying that planners bore in mind when they drew the blueprint to build Chongqing, which is a city situated on hills surrounded by natural landscapes. Instead of destroying the mountainous landscape, these planners grew and developed it along with the city’s construction in order to avoid long-term damages to the ecosystem The city is set against “the confluence” of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers. The architecture has been built to accommodate and adapt to the abrupt height changes of the unique terrain. The result is a phenomenon of architectural terraces built into hills, as if Heaven itself is exhibiting levels of balconies that are “layered endlessly” up and down. As an accomplishment of city planning, Chongqing is a human-made wonder that blends into the restrictions of landscape…as if these buildings have been “embedded into nature…itself”.
