1993 Worlds Pairs SP & FS (CBC) Brasseur & Eisler's Emotional Triumph, Wötzel & Steuer Break Through
Summary: The 1993 World Championships in Prague marked the beginning of a new chapter in pairs skating following the retirement of two-time World champions Isabelle Brasseur (Isabelle Brasseur) & Lloyd Eisler's greatest rivals, Natalia Mishkutenok (Наталья Мишкутёнок) & Artur Dmitriev (Артур Дмитриев). With the title suddenly wide open, established contenders and an exciting generation of new partnerships produced one of the deepest and most competitive fields of the early 1990s. The Technical Program immediately established the favourites. Canada's Isabelle Brasseur (Isabelle Brasseur) & Lloyd Eisler delivered a polished, sophisticated performance featuring a huge triple twist, a clean side-by-side double Axel and one of the most difficult overhead lifts in the competition to lead the field. Close behind were Russia's Evgenia Shishkova (Евгения Шишкова) & Vadim Naumov (Вадим Наумов), while Germany's breakout team Mandy Wötzel & Ingo Steuer announced themselves as genuine medal contenders. Several newly formed partnerships also impressed, including Canada's Jodeyne Higgins & Sean Rice, Canada's Michelle Menzies & Jean-Michel Bombardier, USA's Jenni Meno & Todd Sand, and Germany's Mandy Wötzel & Ingo Steuer, signalling a changing of the guard in world pairs skating. Home favourites Radka Kovaříková & René Novotný saw their medal hopes damaged after errors in front of the Czech crowd, while European champions Marina Eltsova (Марина Ельцова) & Andrei Bushkov (Андрей Бушков) also faltered. The Free Skate became an emotional culmination of Brasseur and Eisler's remarkable season. Skating with renewed maturity after the loss of Isabelle's father, the Canadians produced a flawless performance full of massive pair elements, refined choreography and visible emotion, leaving the arena on its feet. Lloyd's dedication of the performance to Isabelle's late father became one of the defining moments of the championships. Shishkova and Naumov skated strongly but could not match the Canadians' technical difficulty or emotional impact, while Wötzel and Steuer secured their first World medal after another outstanding skate. Michelle Menzies and Jean-Michel Bombardier completed an impressive World debut, confirming the promise of their new partnership. The victory finally delivered the World title Brasseur and Eisler had pursued for years after previous silver and bronze medals, ending Canada's 31-year wait for a World pairs championship. Alongside the Canadians' emotional triumph, Prague also introduced a wave of talented new teams that would shape international pairs skating throughout the remainder of the decade. --- Chapters 00:00 Opening & Women's Qualifying Update 01:58 Pairs Preview & Medal Contenders 05:44 🇨🇦 Jodeyne Higgins & Sean Rice – Technical Program 11:00 🇩🇪 Mandy Wötzel & Ingo Steuer – Technical Program 15:45 🇷🇺 Marina Eltsova (Марина Ельцова) & Andrei Bushkov (Андрей Бушков) 21:07 🇨🇦 Michelle Menzies & Jean-Michel Bombardier 26:21 Feature – Isabelle Brasseur & Lloyd Eisler 28:23 🇨🇦 Isabelle Brasseur & Lloyd Eisler – Technical Program 33:19 🇷🇺 Evgenia Shishkova (Евгения Шишкова) & Vadim Naumov (Вадим Наумов) 38:48 Interview with Brasseur & Eisler 40:24 🇺🇸 Jenni Meno & Todd Sand 46:01 🇨🇿 Radka Kovaříková & René Novotný 52:19 Free Skate Begins / Judges' Feature – Pair Lifts (Jean Senft) 54:20 🇨🇦 Jodeyne Higgins & Sean Rice – Free Skate 1:01:07 🇨🇦 Michelle Menzies & Jean-Michel Bombardier – Free Skate 1:08:05 🇩🇪 Mandy Wötzel & Ingo Steuer – Free Skate 1:15:00 Feature – Brasseur & Eisler's New Direction 1:16:56 🇨🇦 Isabelle Brasseur & Lloyd Eisler – Gold Medal Free Skate 1:23:42 🇷🇺 Evgenia Shishkova & Vadim Naumov – Free Skate 1:30:12 Interview with World Champions Brasseur & Eisler 1:32:42 Final Results, Medals Ceremony, Reactions 1:35:52 Brasseur & Eisler's Re-live Winning Free Skate --- VHS60fps (noisy picture), Canadian coverage (commentators: Chris Cuthbert, Paul Martini, Barb Underhill) The 1993 World Figure Skating Championships were held in Prague (Sportovní hala), Czech Republic in March 1993.
