Gibraltar Northern Defences Walk | British Overseas Territory
Northern Defences of Gibraltar, often referred to as "The Rock's Underground City," is a complex network of tunnels, galleries, and fortifications designed to protect Gibraltar from attacks, particularly from the landward side. Strategically located on the north face of the Rock, these defences were initially developed during the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779–1783) and later expanded during subsequent conflicts, including World War II. The system includes bastions, cannon emplacements, and underground passages that provided secure movement for troops and storage for munitions. Key features like King's Lines, Queen's Lines, and the later Galleries offer breathtaking views of the Bay of Gibraltar and the surrounding landscape. Today, the Northern Defences stand as a testament to Gibraltar's military ingenuity and are a popular destination for history enthusiasts and visitors. #gibraltar #militarybase #travel
