Today I decided to ruin my life... by caramelizing fruit. Have you ever heard of Tanghulu? A traditional Chinese dessert, beloved by children... and by me until five minutes after deciding to make them. In theory, they're supposed to be caramelized fruit sticks, crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside, a riot of color, sugar, and happiness. In practice? I created fruit coated in hot glue. I could have simply eaten an apple. But no. I decided my kitchen should look like a giant ant trap. I'm taking you on this journey to hell, through sugars that never get crunchy, sticks that rebel, and strawberries that explode. An educational experience. To understand what NOT to do.
