Wine Review: Chateau Saint Pierre Pomerol 2015

In my tasting today I have the good fortune to be reviewing a relatively mature wine from Pomerol, from the excellent 2015 vintage. The wine is Chateau Saint Pierre - not to be confused with the 4th growth estate of the same name from Saint Julien - A wine from a fast-improving estate whose vineyards are well-sited, near sone of the appellation's best estates, on the plateau of Pomerol. Château Saint-Pierre is a small estate in Pomerol, owned and managed by the Pradel de Lavaux Family since the 1940s. The family have been vignerons in the region since the 1740s and also own other right Bank properties such as Chateau Bellevue and Chateau Martinet in Saint Emilion and Chateau Le Renaissance in Pomerol. The estate is well-situated on the famous Pomerol Plateau. The 3-hectare estate has 5 plots of vines and a tiny Chateau. The Chateau with some of its vines sits next to the historic Église Saint-Jean and near Chateau La Fleur Petrus. Other plots are near Chateau Trotanoy and Chateau Clinet. Production is tiny, with only about 1000 cases being produced a year. Stephane Derenoncourt consultants have been advising with regard to winemaking and vineyard management here since the 2014 vintage. Vineyards are now planted 85% Merlot & 15% Cabernet Franc – replanting here occurred from 2014 and previously in the 1980s. Small quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere were present in the vineyards up until 2014. 2 of the 5 plots were grubbed up and replanted in Spring 2015. Perhaps because of the replanting the 2015 vintage of Chateau Saint Pierre is 100% Merlot. The soils are combinations of gravels and clays. Sandy gravel particularly rich in iron. The vineyard is managed using sustainable agriculture, with strict control of the yields via bunch thinning to achieve optimum maturity.
