Thatcher and Reagan’s Special Relationship On Display During Cold War Talks at Camp David (1984)
On 22 December 1984, ITN filmed US President Ronald Reagan as he welcomed British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to Camp David, the president's country retreat 62 miles outside Washington DC. Thatcher was accompanied by George HW Bush, Reagan's Vice President, who spoke with Thatcher over breakfast before the main talks scheduled for the afternoon. On the agenda were issues around the US Strategic Defence Initiative (SDI), more commonly known as the Star Wars programme. The pair would also discuss the recent visit to Britain made by Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev, giving Thatcher a chance to brief Reagan on the personality now leading the USSR.
